FAQ

What is a stem splitter, and how does it work?

A stem splitter is a tool that separates a mixed audio track into individual parts, or stems, such as vocals, drums, bass, guitar, piano, or other instruments.

LALAL.AI Stem Splitter uses AI-based audio separation to detect patterns in the input track and split them into selected stems. With its help, you can isolate vocals, remove instruments, create backing tracks, and work with separate elements of a song without manual editing in a DAW.

Can I separate vocals from a song or video?

Yes, you can separate vocals from a song or video file in LALAL.AI Stem Splitter. You upload the file, the service analyzes the audio, separates the vocal and instrumental parts, and then lets you download the versions you need.

Here's how to separate vocals from the rest of the mix:

  1. Open the LALAL.AI Stem Splitter in your browser.
  2. In the upload widget, make sure the Vocal and Instrumental option is selected.
  3. Click the Select Files button to upload your audio or video file.
  4. Listen to the short Vocal preview to check the quality. If needed, change the settings or upload another version of the track.
  5. Click the Split in Full button to process the entire track.
  6. Download the Vocal stem to your device.
How can I make an instrumental track from a song?

If you want to make an instrumental version of a song in LALAL.AI Stem Splitter, follow these steps:

  1. Open LALAL.AI Stem Splitter in your browser.
  2. In the upload widget, make sure the Vocal and Instrumental option is selected.
  3. Click Select Files and upload your audio or video file (MP3, OGG, WAV, FLAC, AVI, MP4, MKV, etc.).
  4. Listen to the short Instrumental preview to check the quality. If needed, change the settings or upload another version of the track.
  5. Click the Split in Full button to process the entire track.
  6. Download the Instrumental stem to your device.
What's the difference between the available neural networks?

LALAL.AI Stem Splitter uses several generations of neural networks for stem separation, and each one may perform differently depending on the song, arrangement, and overall mix complexity. The best option is usually the one that gives the cleanest preview for your specific track.

  • Phoenix — an earlier-generation network used as the foundation for LALAL.AI's stem separation technology.
  • Orion — improved on Phoenix with cleaner separation and a new direct synthesis approach for better vocal and instrumental extraction.
  • Perseus — introduced transformer-based processing and delivered better vocal isolation than previous models.
  • Andromeda — LALAL.AI's most advanced network, built for cleaner vocal separation, more consistent results across different tracks, and faster processing.

In general, newer neural networks offer stronger accuracy and stability, but the final result still depends on the source audio, which is why comparing stem previews remains the best way to choose.

How accurate is AI stem separation, and what affects quality?

AI stem separation is only as good as the model behind it and the quality of the source track. According to our comparison tests, some competing tools can introduce muffling, hissing, crackling, or residual signal in the wrong stem, while LALAL.AI Stem Splitter preserves clarity and makes the extracted audio more usable right away. Final quality still depends on the original file, so higher-quality uploads and the right processing settings will always help you get better results.

How can I remove background noise and music?

Yes, LALAL.AI Stem Splitter can help reduce background noise and music in a song or voice recording. After uploading your audio or video, you can preview the result, adjust the settings if needed, and then process the full file.

  3. Click Select Files to upload your audio or video file.

How are the minutes deducted from my account?

There are several stem separation types you can choose from. One separation type is applied at a time, giving you two stems per file. Depending on the selected type, you receive a pair of vocal and instrumental stems, isolated drums + drumless stem, isolated bass + bassless stem, etc.

Minutes are deducted from the account by the following formula:

Total file length x stem separation type(s) number

Example:

File length: 5 minutes

Selected separation types: Drums, Piano and Vocal/Instrumental.

Total number of deducted minutes: 5 minutes x 3 stem separation types = 15 minutes

What are the Fast and Relaxed splitting modes?

Relaxed mode queues files for processing as server capacity allows (wait times vary by load);
Fast mode provides instant priority access for quicker results. Both deliver identical quality.

In Fast mode, you have a limited number of minutes per month. Unused Fast minutes reset at the start of each new month and do not roll over. Use them before renewal since the remaining time cannot be transferred or accumulated.

Note: You cannot manually switch modes. Instead, processing automatically starts in Fast mode at the beginning of each month until your minute limit is reached. Files then switch to Relaxed mode, where you can process unlimited minutes without restrictions.

Where can I see the remaining limit for splitting in the Fast mode?

All limits are displayed in your profile. On the site, hover the cursor over the minute balance at the top right corner of the page. It will expand into a window with information about your subscription and remaining minutes.

What if I run out of Fast minutes? Can I buy top-ups?

Yes, if your Fast minutes are depleted before the end of the month, you can purchase top-ups (additional minutes) for extra priority queue processing. Depending on your needs, you can get the Master top-up (750 minutes), Premium (3000 minutes), or Enterprise (5000 minutes) option.
