Removing vocals from a track inside Ableton Live used to mean bouncing audio out, running it through an external app, and dragging it back in, breaking your flow every time. 🔴 If Your DAW Doesn’t See the Plugin

Most DAWs automatically check their default VST3/AU folders when they start up, so this step is rarely needed. If it turns out to be necessary though:

  1. Update your DAW to the newest version as older builds sometimes struggle to detect newly installed plugins.
  2. Head into your DAW's plugin settings.
  3. Verify the install folder is included in the scan path list.
  4. Start a complete plugin rescan.
  5. Restart the DAW again so it finishes loading the plugin it just located.

  3. To isolate vocals, choose Vocals from the list of stems and select either High Speed or High Quality mode. Or, for vocal removal, separate just the Instrumental or Others stem (which contains everything Ableton doesn't classify as vocals, drums, or bass).

Ableton processes the audio locally, places the separated tracks into a neat group, and automatically deactivates the original source clip.

Method 4: Phase Cancellation (When You Have the Instrumental)

Phase cancellation is the oldest trick for vocal removal and still works cleanly but only if you already have the official instrumental version of the track.

How it works

When two identical signals are played simultaneously with one phase-inverted (flipped 180°), they cancel each other out. If you have the original mixed track and its instrumental version, inverting and combining them removes everything the instrumental contains, leaving only the vocals. Run the process in reverse (invert the original) to remove the vocals.

How to Do Phase Cancellation in Ableton Live

You can set this up using Ableton's stock Utility device. 

Method 1: The Quick Stereo Utilities (Removing Center Vocals)

This method drops the center channel (vocals) and leaves you with the wide stereo instruments.

  1. Drag your song into an audio track in Arrangement View.
  2. Open the Audio Effects browser and drag a Utility device onto the track.
  3. Click the Phz L (Phase Left) button on the Utility device to invert the phase of the left channel.
  4. Click the Mono button on the Utility device to combine the left and right channels. 

As a result, you'll get the center-panned vocals that drastically quiet down or disappear entirely, leaving a karaoke-style backing track.

Method 2: True Instrumental Phase Extraction (The "A Cappella" Trick)

If you already have an official Instrumental version and a Full Mix version of the exact same song, you can use phase cancellation to perfectly extract a clean, studio-quality a cappella.

  1. Create two separate audio tracks: Name one "Full Mix" and the other "Instrumental".
  2. Align both audio clips perfectly down to the exact sample. If they are off by even a millisecond, the trick will fail.
  3. Drag a Utility device onto the Instrumental track.
  4. Click both the Phz L and Phz R buttons on that Utility device to invert its entire phase.
  5. Play both tracks together. 

The result is the inverted instrumental that completely erases the instruments hiding inside the Full Mix, leaving behind nothing but the isolated vocals.

Limitations

This only works if both versions come from the same master and are perfectly time-aligned. Any difference in EQ, level, compression, or timing between the two versions will introduce artifacts. It produces no partial stems, it's all-or-nothing.

Which Method Should You Use?

If you own Live 12 Suite: Start with the built-in stem separation for in-session work. If you need more stems or higher quality for a final deliverable, reach for the LALAL.AI VST plugin or the web app.
